what's the difference between main domain and addon domain?

The main domain name is the domain associated with the account in billing, and points to the public_html folder. You can not have 2 main domain names. You can have multiple addon domains, and could set an addon domain to point to the same location as the main domain - but from the perspective of billing and cpanel it will still be an addon domain.
