ssh tunnel slow performance

I have a samba share on my ubuntu vps only allowing localhost connection. From my home computer I'm able to do an ssh tunnel to the vps and mount the samba share. The problem is that the share is suuuper slow, it takes like 30 secs to open a 15 line text file. Normal ssh to the vps is just fine.

I was wondering is this has happened to someone else maybe?

What OS does your local computer use?

I have not used a samba share in the past. I don't remember the speeds being great. SSHFS may be better if you home computer can support it: https://github.com/libfuse/sshfs

NFS over UDP was generally ok under 80 ms latency.

If the system is openvz email support to ensure your vps is running vswap.

Hi there. I'm using ubuntu on both ends and its a kvm vps.

I set up an openvpn to my vps and samba was still slow. Other services perform fine. It looks like samba is not meant for the wan.

I just did ftp over ssh tunnel and performs ok and does what i needed.

Actually what I did was just an ssh file transfer, I though i was doing ft because i was using filezilla but since i used port 22 it's actually sftp, not plain ftp.
